(Introduction) 'The familiar sans serif lettering produced by Edward Johnston for the London Underground in 1916 set a new standard of design for this form of character. It inspired a widespread movement towards a redesigning of the type faces usually known as gothics and grotesques, and a number of famous designers gave close attention to the subject. Linotype's Metro series is an original sans serif face designed by W. A. Dwiggins, the eminent American artist and typographer, and is one of the most readable of contemporary sans serifs. Its useful range of sizes and weights makes the Metro series particularly valuable in newspaper, publicity, and jobbing work.'
