(Publishers overview) 'Schrofer’s sketches are not only numerous, but also extremely varied. Pencil, watercolour, pen and felt-tip; preliminary studies, proof prints, variations and other stages of the creation and production process. Description of the design process in the pre-digital era. Traditional crafts and sketches have become topical again for younger generations of designers.

A book of sketches by a graphic designer is unique. Jurriaan Schrofer did not discard his drawings and he even kept production drawings and other pre-press material. His sketches and illustrations from the period 1950-1990 have a special visual and poetic strength. A large selection of them has been made for this publication, introduced by an essay. The book also contains an extensive presentation in word and image of the design and printing process in the pre-digital era.

Frederike Huygen is an art and design historian and has written many publications about design. She recently obtained her doctorate at the UvA with Jurriaan Schrofer, graphic designer, photo book pioneer, art director, teacher, art director and environmental artist. Huygen works as a freelance researcher and author and is chair of the Stichting Designgeschiedenis Nederland (Dutch Design History Foundation).'
