(Publishers overview) 'Effie Paleologou’s work, commissioned by Photoworks, explores the secret life of Hastings after dark, its mystery and sense of imminent danger. A familiar townscape is transformed into a nightmarish space of reflected, artificial light and ornate, menacing shadows. This is a radically different narrative to the one found in the tourist brochures. The photographs speak of the bleakness of 4am, of loss and abandonment. It is as if the action has literally just moved on elsewhere seconds before we arrived. It contains an essay by Liz Kent.'
