(Preface) 'Ninety per cent of all graphic design is done in advertising and its point is that it helps to create an idea, a mood, a style to which it can later subscribe. Good graphic design is in a sense Obvious. It is the gesture that invites, that awakens interest and inspires curiosity.
In GRAPHIS ANNUAL '69/70 the reader finds a world of inspiring ideas and of imaginative advertising approaches. The 928 illustrations show with what a wide variety of techniques and formulations advertising ideas can be put over. The eighteenth GRAPHIS ANNUAL is in fact - as a critic has said - more than a picture-book: it sets standards, it provides targets and thereby helps the designer to keep his work on the mark.
This impressive selection was made from over 17000 entries from 45 countries. It is divided into six main sections with is categories that extend over 72 colour and I65 black-and-white pages.
Captions and texts in three languages, plus a detailed index, further enhance the value of this annual, which is of course an independent publication and not a condensation from GRAPHIS magazine, as is sometimes erroneously supposed; in fact only a very small percentage of the illustrations have been previously reproduced in the magazine. Jacket design: Raymond Savignac.'
