(Preface) 'Our society relies for its existence on the consumer behaviour of its members. And consumption depends on —inter alia -advertising.

Is this yearbook of advertising graphics, then, concerned with our society? Is it, indeed, a critical commentary on society? We leave the reader to form his own opinion.

Perhaps it will be an "committed" opinion; the verdict of the man who quite simply has to live in our times and in our society; who realizes that advertising — the communication of advertising concepts —exerts a greater influence than ever before on the shaping of our current environment.

Perhaps it may be that people in advertising-art directors, graphic designers, film and television people, consultants and even copywriters —will form opinions too. People who quite simply allow the book's many hundreds of examples of international advertising graphics to act upon them as a catalyst.

For the twentieth year, Walter Herdeg has now made his selection-from 19 780 works submitted -for the yearbook of international advertising art. It provides a comprehensive survey of the newest, most striking examples of visual communication in advertising.

Its 240 pages, introduced in a foreword by a leading American graphic artist, Paul Rand, comprise 939 illustrations - I60 of them in colour-with informative captions in English, German, and French.

The book is divided into six chapters with 20 subject groups. An index simplifies the finding of particular works anywhere in this impressive and comprehensive anthology which has become an indispensable tool for everyone engaged in the field of visual communication.'
