(Introduction) 'The discovery of an image with a meaning which is universally comprehensible - a symbol, or motif - is central to Malcolm Garrett's design method. Garrett is a designer who has a strong instinct for play and who engages the spectator in that process. He toys with cultural conventions, traditions, and especially language, in the process of creating a meaningful and inventive solution to the problem of communication, and in discovering that coincidence of word and image which translates abstract ideas into a concrete form.

Thus many of the motifs in this exhibition have a dual reading; they act as powerful graphic forms in their own right and also convey underlying references, puns, synergies of thought and feeling, and it is this duality which makes the images memorable; they amuse and startle as they inform.'
