(Preface) 'The contents of this book, like the content of any course of basic instruction, are offered as a clarification of certain fundamental areas of enquiry and a spur to the young artist to continue for himself a constant inquisitiveness about the phenomena of pictorial and plastic expression. It does not pretend to be more than an introduction to a field that is capable of almost limitless extension, personal variation and individual emphasis. How a student approaches this field of enquiry is less important than the fact of him reaching it. Emphatically this is not a primer in a special sort of art. By now we should have realised that is is too easy to dragoon young students in a certain direction by offering them only a censored part of what should be a comprehensive and undogmatic training it is as easy and as valueless to create hot-houses for producing pseudo constructivists as it was for producing pseudo impressionists.
