(Preface) 'Erberto Carboni has a vocation for design. An artist who turns his talent to designing achieves something better, more novel and different than a painter working on "publicity"; that is, in the service of propaganda. Design is no instrument of propaganda: it gives a stylised image of a productive activity, which is quite another thing. And Carboni, an impeccable stylist, has even become an architect, for there are secret bonds between design and architecture: the architecture of advertising is a kind of design "through images in space"; ephemeral architecture which, if unquickened by a breath of poetry (this is vital) makes no appeal during its brief span of life.'
