(Preface) Friedel Vordemberge-Gildewart's road has carried him through various countries, and has caused him to meet many of his companions on different parts of this road. For the artist, only the aim, the direction of the road was established in advance: it led towards the elaboration, the perfection of abstract art, and towards its application in the everyday environment of contemporary mankind. The details of the road - its stops and its changes -were established by history: by politics and by history of art.
