(Preface) 'IN THIS BOOK the authors have attempted to establish certain basic principles on which graphic artists can work. Both by historical research and contemporary example the development of letters and typefaces is presented as a continuous story from the earliest times, through the work of the Italian calligraphers such as Arrighi and Palatino and the Venetian printers, Jenson and Aldus, up to the present day.
The authors explain at length the beginnings of commercial printing, the effect of photography on graphic re- production, the growth of advertising and the commercial art studio. The work of William Morris, the Arts and Crafts movement and the private presses are also discussed. A most valuable introduction to the graphic print- ing processes comes at the end of the book.
The work of such designers as Jan van Krimpen, Eric Gill, Reynolds Stone, Paul Nash, Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden, Barnett Freedman and Lynton Lamb is analysed together with a wide selection of their work. Graphic Design is richly illustrated with 40 plates and over 120 illustrations in the text, many of which are in colour.'
