Sottsass Associati is a company-studio that was founded in 1980. The partners are five architects: Ettore Sottsass, Marco Zanini, Marco Susani, Johanna Grawunder and Mike Ryan. The managing director is Sebastiano Mosterts. The staff numbers from thirty to forty and is divided into three groups: architecture and interiors, industrial design, graphic design.
The graphic design projects published in this book are the result of collaboration between Ettore Sottsass, Marco Zanini, Christoph Radl, Valentina Grego, Anna Wagner, Mario Milizia and Franco Luchini.
(Introduction)This book contains a selection of graphic and corporate image designs done by Sottsass Associati between 1985 and 1990. They concern a very diverse range of clients: from heavy industrial plant corporations operating on a large technological scale such as Ansaldo, to consumer goods manufacturers who pay special attention to design and image such as Alessi; from publishing houses and magazines to private individuals.
What links these different projects is their common search for a way of doing graphic design which is as free as possible from any fixed structural patterns and rules of composition, and which is concentrated on a clearly recognizable identification: a logo, a photographic image, or an iconographic reference around which to build the design.'
