(Introduction) 'March, 1996 marks Ginza Graphic Gallery's 10th anniversary since its opening. Our sincere appreciation goes to all those who over the years have shown us deep understanding and given us their full support.
In celebration of our 10th anniversary, 2 exhibitions: "1950s Swiss International Typography" in October of 1995 and "American Typography 1950s-'60s" in February of 1996 were held with the aim of examining the history of typography after the war.
Modern typography, established primarily in Switzerland during the 1950s, flourished as a free and diversified American typography in the 1960s. This trend hit the Japanese design scene with a strong impact which was at a vacuous state after the war and thereafter, greatly influenced the Japanese typography.
"Transition of Modern Typography Europe & America 1950s—'60s" includes the works from these 2 exhibitions along with bibliographic sketches of the designers. In the process of publishing this book, we received much cooperation from designers and numerous others, especially Mr. Ikko Tanaka, Mr. Shutaro Mukai, Mr. Kiyoshi Kanai, Ms. Chiharu Fujiwara and Mr. Katsuhiro Kinoshita.
We thank them again for all their help. It is our hope that the publication of this book will contribute to the new development of graphic design.'
