To look back over the posters of years past is to see the people of different times, in their period settings, in the process of being sold something. A review of the posters of the past is, in effect, a graphic review of the mass culture of the past, of history itself. The posters in this book were chosen because of their historical significance rather than for their artistic merit - although some that say the most interesting are also the most beautiful and the most original.'
