(Preface) 'The partners of Pentagram, the authors and designers of this book, make their living by design and spend their time living by design. Design for them means the efficient achievement of planned purposes and the artefacts which are the end results. There is not much in the book about Pentagram and the partners; but a lot about their work and their belief that design can fulfil both a social and an economic purpose.
The book is not aimed at the experienced designer who knows about these purposes, and perhaps agrees with and contributes towards their fulfilment. It is mainly for those who have a sympathy and interest in the subject and would like to know more about the scope of design, the ideas behind its practice, and the ways in which it is put to work.'
