Created by Herb Lubalin and the International Typeface Corporation, U&lc (Upper and lower case) was a pioneering publication aimed at the design community. In circulation from 1970 to 1999, U&lc showcased the latest typefaces from ITC, which was notable for being the first type foundry that did not engage in metal type production.

Herb Lubalin held the position of art director for 11 years until his passing in 1981, collaborating with a variety of skilled designers to craft each issue featuring ITC's innovative fonts. The magazine often showcased experimental typographic layouts alongside illustrations, cartoons, and discussions highlighting the advantages of the new type designs. It quickly gained popularity within the design and typography circles, becoming a sought-after collector's item and marking the beginning of a new era in expressive typography.
