(Introduction) 'Clarity and character aren't comfortable bedfellows, but that's exactly what we wanted to achieve in creating a new font for the Ubuntu interface. As a platform that's used by tens of millions of people every day we knew readability would be paramount.
But we also wanted the typeface to reflect our values and our character.
Being a global phenomenon and caring about every user, we also wanted the typeface to cover a wide variety of character sets. And we wanted to build it in partnership with those users, involving them in the review and refinement process, benefiting from the wisdom of crowds while retaining firm design focus and leadership. We also wanted it to reflect our values of openness and contribution, with a license that lets anybody else use the font for any purpose, as well as allowing them to build derivative works without having to ask permission.
Dalton Maag agreed to take on the challenge - to lead the design process, working both with us as a customer and with a global audience of enthusiastic types; from teachers to rocket scientists, from developers to artists, from grandchildren to grandparents, from Cape Town to Moscow. The process has been fun and productive, and our community of users and contributors are delighted with the result and helping to expand and improve it further.
We hope you love it too!' Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu Founder
