(Preface) 'The time has passed when the corporation was willing to leave the answer to the question of visual identity to chance. Today, that part of the corporate image that is its visual identity is consciously, carefully, meticulously studied.

This book is a series of studies of the visual identity programs of a variety of American and Canadian corporations. The programs dis- cussed range in size and type. They have been carefully selected because of their recognized individual excellence and because together they offer a thorough cross section. Visual identity programs discussed are: Canadian National Railways, CBS, Devoe, Eastern, IBM, the motion picture The Man with the Golden Arm, Mobil, Olivetti Underwood, Peter, Paul and Mary, RCA, the Restaurant Associates restaurant, La Fonda del Sol, The Royal Bank of Canada, Torrington, Westinghouse, and Xerox.'
