(Preface) 'I don't know exactly when I first met Jean Widmer. But as far back as I can remember, I've felt a sense of friendship. He was then the artistic director of the Jardin des Modes. I would go see him in the evenings at the studio, and I discovered graphic design by watching him work.
When François Mathey and I founded the Centre de Création Industrielle, we felt it was necessary to express ourselves clearly, to demonstrate the functional quality of a discourse and a discipline that was then little known: design. The word still had meaning, and called for rigor and mass production. No one imagined that design, for some, would become synonymous with limited editions, formalist trappings, and pre-industrial "baroquism"! Jean Widmer already had a reputation for being a demanding graphic designer...'
