(Introduction) 'I am both very well placed and too close to the subject to be able to adequately present the selection of work gathered here. It is difficult for a Briton to adequately assess the specific character of design in Great Britain, but nevertheless, I know what I like. Defining national characteristics is, I fear, a challenge best left to a more objective observer, but what is immediately evident is that there is enormous creativity in this country. Perhaps only the Netherlands can rival it in the number of high-quality, research-minded groups of designers in such a small geographical area. Identifying designers worthy of an exhibition like this is an easy task; choosing a few is more of a lottery; such is the breadth and diversity of British graphic design. For me, the most stimulating designers in this exhibition possess that typically British quality of being dead serious about their work without ever taking it too seriously. Their essential quality is a sense of fun, if not a sense of the absurd...'
