A Handbook of Printing Type with Notes on the Style of Composition and Graphic Processes used by Cowells
(Preface) 'This book has been designed to help typographer and publisher in the production of bookwork. It will be of little assistance to the advertising layout man seeking the letter forms of display faces. A glance at the Contents page will show the scope of the book.
What service should the printer give to the publisher? We think he should follow out his wishes and interpret them in spirit and letter. But also, where the publisher so desires it, the printer should be able to plan and design books, bringing together author, illustrator and typographer so that there is agreement and common understanding of the problem to be tackled. Naturally, meticulous supervision of the work through every department must follow.
In addition, with a return to better conditions, a precise schedule of delivery dates will enable the publisher to plan far ahead. With all these factors, the production of fine bookwork at an economic rate becomes a reality.'
